Founded in 1855 as Aargauische Bank. Current name adopted in 1913. Serves a German-speaking, mainly Protestant region of northern Switzerland (Aargau in German, Argovie in French, capital: Aarau, 37 km west of Zurich). Liabilities covered by cantonal guarantee. Acquired Bank Austria Creditanstalt (Schweiz), Zurich, in 2001 and renamed it AKB Privatbank.
