History Founded in 1845. Serves a mainly French-speaking region in western Switzerland (the canton of Vaud, capital: Lausanne, 51 km north-east of Geneva).  Liabilities not covered by any cantonal guarantee. Acquired Banque Vaudoise de Crédit in 1993, Crédit Foncier Vaudois in 1995, Banque Galland & Cie, Lausanne (88%), and Ecofi group in France (65%) in 1998 and La Compagnie Gestion SIM, Milan (80%) and Unione Gestioni SIM, Milan (minority stake) in 1999. Opened offices in Athens (1996), Milan (1996) and Paris (1997). Rescued by cantonal government in 2003, after heavy losses from real estate loans eroded its capital. Some former officials face prosecution. Has since sold Banque Galland and carried out major cutbacks.

Other offices None outside the canton
