History

Founded in 1834 as Banque Cantonale de Berne. Current name adopted in January 1991 when it merged with Hypothekarkasse des Kantons. Serves a region in western Switzerland (capital: Berne or Bern, which is also the capital of Switzerland, 94 km south-west of Zurich). In 1998, became the first cantonal bank to incorporate as a private stock company.
